Easy chickpea curry is an old fashioned recipe. This curry has many benefits because it is prepared with simple ingredients and it can be prepared easily at home with original food ingredients. It’s all ingredients have antibiotic effects on body like turmeric, onion, ginger, garlic and hot spices. This curry provides best curry and healthy soup benefits in one food. Chickpea is not only limited to curry but it is used in many varieties of food like roasted chickpea, chickpeas salad, boiled and in addition to other foods.
Chickpea has different names in different areas of the world.Garbanzo beans is it’s second famous name. It is known as channa in Pakistan and India. Bengal or Bengal gram and Egyptian pea are also used for this dish. It has two types of color white and black.
Ingredients for Chickpea curry:
Chickpeas 2 cup or 250g
Vegetable Oil 3 to 4 tablespoon
Onion 2 medium chopped
Tomato 2 big size chopped
Ginger garlic paste 2 tablespoons
Water to boil 1¹/² litre
Salt 1 tablespoon
Red chili powder 1 teaspoon or to taste
Turmeric powder 1 teaspoon
Dry herbs powder 1 teaspoon for flavor
I use mix grounded hot spices like bay leaves, cumin, cinnamon, clove etc. It enhances the taste of any salty dish.
Method to cook easy chickpea curry:
Step 1 Soak chickpeas:
Soak the cleaned and washed chickpeas for at least 6 hours. It will help you to cook soft chickpea curry.
Step 2 Boil chickpea:
Take a pressure cooker/instant pot or saucepan. Add 1¹/² litre water, turmeric powder, salt and dry herbs. Boil it and add rinsed chickpeas. In pressure cooker or instant pot, boil it for 12 to 15 minutes. In saucepan it will take 25 to 30 minutes to tender.
Step 3 Start cooking:
Take a pan or sauce pan. Add oil and chopped onions. Saute to get it light brown. Add red chilli powder, ginger garlic paste while stirring. Add tomato paste. Sprinkle water when it sticks. After 5 minutes add 1 cup water to tender the ingredients with close lid.
Step 4 Final Cooking:
When water is dried and Ingredients take gravy texture. Now add boiled chickpeas and fry for some time. Add chickpeas water as you want in curry. If chickpeas are soft enough then switch off the heat after 5 minutes. If they are hard, cook to tender. Add garnishing items like finally chopped ginger and chopped parsley. Close the lid. Warm when to serve.
Why and How to soak chickpeas?
Chickpeas have hard texture which takes time to tender. It is soaked in water for some hours which help to tender with half time in boiling. If you have to cook it for lunch then soak one night before in normal water. If you have to cook chickpeas for dinner soak in the morning on normal temperature. If you have less time then soak in hot water. If you don’t soak chickpeas at least for 6 hours then you have to boil for double time.
